Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy: Causes, Relief Tips & Therapy in York & Hanover
Let’s Talk About Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy…
Pelvic pain is a common concern during pregnancy, affecting many moms-to-be at some point. Whether it’s a dull ache, sharp discomfort, or a heavy sensation, pelvic pain can disrupt your daily life and make simple tasks feel challenging.
The good news? There are effective ways to manage pelvic pain and support your body as it navigates the natural changes of pregnancy. If you’re in York, Lancaster, Hanover, or East Berlin, this guide will help you understand why pelvic pain happens and how to find relief.
Why Does Pelvic Pain Happen During Pregnancy?
Your body goes through incredible changes during pregnancy to prepare for labor and support your growing baby. One of the biggest shifts is the release of a hormone called relaxin, which helps loosen the ligaments in your pelvis. While this is essential for childbirth, it can also cause pelvic instability, leading to pain or discomfort.
Other contributing factors include:
The growing weight of your baby increasing pressure on your pelvic floor.
Postural changes as your center of gravity shifts.
Muscles working overtime to stabilize your pelvis and spine.
These changes are normal, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through pelvic pain.
Common Types of Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy
Pelvic pain can show up in different ways depending on the source. Here are the most common types I see in clients:
Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD): Pain at the front of the pelvis where the pubic bones meet, often felt as sharp or aching discomfort.
Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain: Achy or sharp pain near the back of the pelvis, often radiating into the buttocks or thighs.
Round Ligament Pain: Sharp pulling sensations in the lower belly or groin, especially during sudden movements.
Pelvic Pressure: A heavy or dragging sensation in the pelvic area, often due to baby’s weight pressing downward.
If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s important to take steps to ease the pain and support your body.
How to Manage Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy
Here are some effective strategies to reduce pelvic pain and feel more comfortable during pregnancy:
Incorporate Gentle Movement
Light, intentional movement like walking, stretching, or prenatal yoga can help improve blood flow and reduce stiffness. Look for local prenatal yoga classes or safe movement options.
Practice Breathwork
Deep, diaphragmatic breathing can engage your core and reduce tension in your pelvic floor. This technique is simple but highly effective for easing pain and promoting relaxation.
Use a Pregnancy Support Belt
A support belt can stabilize your pelvis and reduce strain, especially if you’re experiencing SPD or SI joint pain. Many moms find this to be a game changer for day-to-day comfort.
Optimize Your Posture
As your belly grows, posture shifts can increase strain on your pelvis. Focus on standing tall, engaging your core, and keeping your pelvis in a neutral position to reduce pressure.
Seek Pelvic Floor Therapy
A pelvic health therapist can assess your specific pain and create a customized plan to address it. If you’re in York County or the surrounding areas, I’m here to help you find relief and feel stronger during pregnancy.
When to Seek Help
While mild pelvic pain is common, it’s important to seek professional help if:
The pain is severe or constant.
It interferes with your daily activities or sleep.
You’re unsure how to manage it on your own.
Pelvic health therapy can provide targeted support to ease pain and prepare your body for labor and postpartum recovery.
